Achieve your English Learning Goals with the Minnesota English Language Program

For over 55 years, the Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) at the University of Minnesota has helped international students excel academically, advance professionally, and build a global network of colleagues and friends.

Your Path to Academic, Professional, and Social Success

As part of the University of Minnesota (UMN), one of the highest ranked public research universities in the United States, MELP offers rigorous courses designed to help students succeed.

Why Choose MELP?

  • Expert Faculty: Our instructors are dedicated, caring professionals with advanced training in TESOL and cross-cultural teaching experience.
  • High-Quality Instruction: Students take 25 hours of classes per week in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and grammar. Classes combine intensive language study with experiential learning and interactive language learning technology.
  • Small Class Sizes: Personalized attention helps students from around the world achieve their goals.
  • Exceptional Support Services: MELP offers orientation sessions, individualized advising, and guidance for applying to degree programs.
  • Student Activities: Regular student activities let students explore the community, learn about culture, and practice English outside class.

Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Program (IEP) is ideal for students improving their English for academic, professional, or personal goals. The program includes four levels, from high-beginning to high-advanced.

Program Schedule:

  • Fall Semester: Early September through mid-December (15 weeks)
  • Spring Semester: Mid-January through early May (15 weeks)
  • Summer Session: Late June through mid-August (7 weeks)

Detailed schedules and costs are available on the MELP website.

Your Bridge to a Degree

MELP helps students achieve their dreams. The majority of full-time IEP students with academic goals successfully gain admission to U.S. colleges and universities after MELP.

  • Conditional Admission to the University of Minnesota: UMN offers conditional admission to qualified undergraduates, who begin their academic degree programs after studying in MELP.
  • English Proficiency Recommendations: MELP can provide English proficiency recommendations for admission to the University of Minnesota. All undergraduate and most graduate programs accept MELP’s End-of-Term Assessment scores, and undergraduate programs also accept course grades in MELP’s high-advanced level.
  • Partner Institutions: MELP also maintains direct admissions agreements with more than ten Minnesota colleges and universities, enabling qualified students to transfer after completing the IEP’s intermediate, advanced, or high-advanced level.

Scholarship Opportunities

The Minnesota English Language Program (MELP) Scholarship, made possible by the Karin L. Larson Legacy Fund and other supporters, provides funding for students with strong academic performance and a clear vision for how MELP will support their goals.
