Kent State’s eight-campus system is home to numerous DI makerspaces, with the Kent campus alone featuring 26 DI nodes. Each node is equipped with specialized equipment and focuses on different areas of creativity, providing students with the resources they need to explore and develop innovative ideas. These makerspaces are designed to be student-ready, allowing for immediate hands-on experience.

2. DI Hub

The DI Hub on the Kent campus is a large, open-access collaborative space. This innovation accelerator environment is designed to inspire and support students from all disciplines. The DI Hub includes: the DI Hatchery, small, short-term incubator spaces managed by DI GROUP and LaunchNet. These spaces offer students the opportunity to work on their projects with professional guidance and support.

What This Means for International Students

1. Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

At Kent State, the DI ecosystem is more than just a collection of labs and equipment. It is a mindset and a community that encourages cross-disciplinary collaboration. Students from various fields can work together to identify problems and develop innovative solutions, making the learning experience richer and more impactful.

2. Real-World Impact

Kent State’s DI initiative emphasizes solving real-world problems. For example, the Campus Kitchen project, a student-run nonprofit, addresses food insecurity and waste. This project not only provides practical experience but also instills a sense of social responsibility and community engagement among students.

3. State-of-the-Art Facilities

The DI Hub and other DI nodes are equipped with advanced tools and technologies. From 3D printing and CNC milling to industrial sewing machines and high-resolution cameras, students have access to top-tier resources that can turn their creative visions into reality.

4. Inclusive and Supportive Environment

The DI initiative is built on the principle of being "shared by all, owned by none," promoting a collaborative culture where every student’s ideas are valued. This inclusive environment is particularly beneficial for international students, who can feel integrated and supported in their innovative endeavors.

Inspiring Stories and Opportunities

1. Junior Campbell, Executive Director of the DI Initiative

Junior Campbell emphasizes that the DI initiative at Kent State is about making a significant difference through design. By working on interdisciplinary teams, students gain context and a starting point for addressing complex problems, enhancing their engagement and learning.

2. Robert Guard, Manager of Campus Kitchen

Robert Guard’s work with the Campus Kitchen project highlights the practical application of DI principles. By tackling food insecurity and waste, students learn valuable life lessons and understand the impact of their work on their community.

3. Unique Facilities

The redesign of the old art building into the DI Hub symbolizes Kent State's commitment to creating collaborative spaces. This transformation aligns with the university's goal of fostering an innovative and interdisciplinary learning environment.
