Your Checklist for Studying Abroad: Visa Edition

“Getting a visa is the most crucial step in preparing to study abroad, but you don't have to be stressed. You need to begin by gathering all the necessary information and following the instructions given,” says Alice Do, international student at Los Angeles Pierce College.

“From my experience, when it comes to the interview, I focused on finances, academics, and future plans, which comprehensively shows my clear intention when studying abroad.”

“On interview day,” Alice continues, “having confidence and the related documents were essential. Now, with my visa in hand, I'm enjoying my study abroad adventure. Remember, preparation and confidence are your best ways to obtain a visa!”

Step 1: Understanding the visa process

Think of your visa as your best friend and ticket to studying abroad. It’s essential to gather as much information as possible about the visa requirements and procedures specific to your country. Use resources like the internet and local consulates to understand the steps involved.

Step 2: Filling out the S1 form

The first official step is to complete the S1 form, which provides the consulate with necessary information about yourself, your school, and your family. The good news is that most of this can be done online, saving you time and effort.

Step 3: Scheduling your visa appointment

After filling out the S1 form, you’ll need to pay the visa application fee and schedule your interview appointment. This can also be done online. Make sure to follow the specific instructions provided by your country's consulate, as procedures can vary.

Step 4: Preparing for the interview

Preparation is key to a successful visa interview. Focus on three main topics: finances, studies, and your future plans. Gather all necessary documents, such as your academic transcripts and appointment confirmation. Being well-prepared will help you confidently answer the consulate’s questions and demonstrate your determination to study abroad.

Step 5: The interview day

On the day of your interview, bring all required documents and arrive on time. Confidence is crucial, so take a deep breath and answer questions calmly and clearly. Remember, the consulate staff is there to help you—they want to see you succeed.

Last bit of advice

Once you’ve completed your interview, the next step is to prepare for your new adventure in the United States — pack your bags and get excited!
