Ongoing Mental Health Initiatives

Peninsula College hosts regular mental health gatherings throughout the academic year. These sessions, organized by Erin Kate (Academic Advisor for International and Veteran Students) and supported by Sandi MacIntosh (Faculty Counselor), provide students with a safe space to unwind, share, and connect with peers. Each session has a unique focus tailored to address different aspects of mental health.

  1. Fall Session: Stress Management Toolkit
In the fall, students gather to create a toolkit for managing stress. Sandi leads the conversation, offering practical strategies and encouraging students to share their own experiences and tips. The goal is to equip students with a variety of tools they can use to navigate academic and personal stressors.
  2. Winter Session: Informal Debriefing and Socializing
The winter session is more relaxed, allowing students to come together, talk, and enjoy each other’s company. This informal gathering provides a much-needed break from academic pressures and a chance for students to bond over shared experiences. Food is provided, adding a comforting touch to the event.
  3. Spring Session: Understanding Depression and Anxiety
During the spring session, Sandi addresses depression and anxiety, offering valuable information and facilitating small group discussions. Students have the opportunity to discuss their feelings and learn from each other in a supportive environment. This session also includes food, making it a welcoming and inclusive event.

Host family workshops

Sandi also conducts workshops for host families, focusing on recognizing mental health warning signs in students. These sessions are interactive, allowing host families to share their experiences and discuss effective ways to support their hosted students. The workshops not only provide valuable information but also strengthen the sense of community among host families.

Student support sessions

Peninsula College is committed to ongoing mental health support. Regular support sessions provide information on anxiety and depression, offering students a chance to meet others facing similar challenges and discuss coping strategies.

Video testimonial: Cicily’s experience

Cicily, a student at Peninsula, shared her positive experience with the college’s mental health initiatives in a recent interview. She highlighted the importance of these gatherings in creating a supportive community and providing practical advice for managing mental health challenges. Watch Cicily’s full testimonial here.
